It can be disorienting to think that design is important. Not because design isn’t important — but because it’s easy to misunderstand what design is.
Actual design is rare, and most things assumed to be design are really decoration or advertising. But the goal of design is never to make something look designed. Or to sell.
The goal of design is to improve our lives — by making a small piece of it easier to understand or easier to use. Design is for the things that make us human: our minds and our hands. Understanding and using.
If your goal isn’t these things, then you aren’t designing. And calling it design is only preventing a larger appreciation of the difference.
As a future designer, you’re taking on an indispensable role. Not just in improving lives through design, but in helping those same people understand how important design can be.
And you’re only just beginning to understand that yourself.
