The subscribers of our blog have probably noticed that a large percentage of my posts are hockey-related (see Good Life, Zombies, and Regulators). So this post on the new logo for my traveling hockey team won’t surprise you. The Omaha Swift will make their travel tournament debut at the 2010 Kansas City Showdown in a little over a month. Named after, you guessed it… Taylor Swift. I was faced with a very difficult task: create a logo that would please our Swift-crazy female captain that, at the same time, wouldn’t offend the 15 males on the team.

Swift logo

There were several directions I could have gone, but in the end I knew it had to have a country western feel to reference the type of music Taylor Swift plays. I came up with the overlapping horseshoes in an early sketch and believed that once it had the bright colors and outlines of a sports logo, it would become a very viable option. The slant of the logo doesn’t hurt the actual definition of swift: moving or capable of moving with great speed or velocity. This is why Swift is actually a fairly appropriate name for a hockey team and not just a tribute to the pop star. We will be getting jerseys printed up very soon, so expect at least one more hockey-related post in the near future.
