Omaha Shirt Project:
Areas of Omaha

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Oxide Design Co. loves Omaha and our neighborhoods. In late 2016, we launched Omaha Shirt Project: t-shirts we designed to help others who also love these communities show off their pride and support their neighborhood associations. In the ensuing 18 months, the original 12 shirts grew to 18 and the project has enabled us to donate over $4,000 to neighborhoods across the city. To commemorate the success of the Omaha Shirt Project, we…

Crafting your beer brand:
Good design is good business

I was recently invited to make a presentation about craft beer branding to the attendees of the 2018 Nebraska Grower & Brewer Conference. (Due to a scheduling snafu, I was unable to make the presentation in person, but instead ended up recording it later. Silver lining: now there’s a video that you can watch from the comfort of your couch while enjoying your favorite craft beer.) The presentation is titled “Crafting your beer brand: Good design is good business” — and…

Oxide featured in LogoLounge 10

Oxide’s logo design work was recently featured in LogoLounge 10: 2,500 International Identities by Leading Designers, which is part of a long-running series. The latest volume was judged by ten leading designers from around the world (including Aaron Draplin, Von Glitschka, Su Mathews Hale, Emily Oberman, and Felix Sockwell) and authored by Bill Gardner and Emily Potts. More than 37,000 logos were considered for the tenth volume in the set. With the inclusion of six logos in this most recent book,…

Oxide celebrates 16 sweet years of branding and design

This week we celebrate Oxide’s 16th anniversary! Full disclosure: on a somewhat regular basis, we have conversations with clients about promoting any given round-number anniversary of their business. The question we always pose is: “Yes, it’s a success that you’ve been in business this long, but why would your customers care about it?” More often than not, we counsel them to skip making a public splash and to instead use the occasion to internally evaluate how things are progressing, and…

A peek into an Oxide design award submission

Last year, Oxide was honored with a nomination for a prestigious national design award. Spoiler alert: we did not end up winning the award. Even though we didn’t win, submitting an entry for the competition helped us clarify and express a lot of things about Oxide and who we are. In line with the award, which recognizes design that enhances the quality of life, we focused our application on Oxide’s unique contributions to the community and the ways we’ve used design…

Michael Bierut commemorative poster

How do you design a poster to promote one of the most recognizable designers of the modern era? I sit on the board of directors for design alliance OMAha (a local organization about design in all forms and the education and community that perpetuate it). As part of an ongoing speaker series, we arranged to host Michael Bierut of Pentagram to commemorate the tenth anniversary of daOMA. The team at Oxide jumped at the chance to design the promotional materials…

The Most Magical Place on Earth (that every designer needs to visit)

It’s rare to find a designer without some level of reverence for Disney. The brand is a household name internationally, and practically every designer yearns for a chance to work on any kind of project with them. (One Omaha-based firm even got the opportunity.) You already know they own the rights to every cool franchise in the universe (except for Aquaman). And you’ve undoubtedly heard the story of their billion-dollar MagicBand. But take it from me, the Disney brand is…

Oxide featured in Smithsonian Design Museum

I am honored to share that the work of Oxide Design Co. has been featured in an exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. The Field Guides To Ensuring Voter Intent that we designed in collaboration with Center for Civic Design were selected as part of the By the people: Designing a better America exhibit. Starting from a modest Kickstarter project in 2012, the Field Guides have grown from four volumes to 10, covering topics from…

Oxide’s 15th anniversary!

Today marks a big day in the history of Oxide Design Co. — we’re celebrating fifteen years in business! It sounds cliché, but it feels like it went by in the blink of an eye. I can still clearly recall those first days of sitting in the big, empty Oxide office at 4013 Farnam Street, wondering how I was going to keep myself busy.

Oxide in Communication Arts Design Annual 57

We are pleased to announce that the design work of Oxide has been selected for inclusion in Communication Arts’ Design Annual 57. The logo we designed for Nebraska Craft Brewers Guild is featured on page 112 of the September/October 2016 issue, and in the online gallery of winners. This marks our sixth time winning CA, and Oxide is this year’s only honoree from anywhere in Nebraska or Iowa. Based on entries selected out of the total number of entries received,…
