Omaha streetcar poster

It’s safe to say that I’ve always been a fan of public transit of all kinds. Whenever I travel to other cities, I try my best to use their public transportation systems instead of taxis or Lyft rides. Nine years ago, Oxide even partnered with Metro Transit to completely rebrand Omaha’s buses, and we’ve been working to support their efforts ever since. About three years ago, I attended an auction at Omaha’s historic Kountze Mansion, where they were literally selling…

Oxide celebrates 17 years of success

This week Oxide Design Co. celebrates 17 years in business. It’s not one of those big, round numbers, but I think it’s worth recognizing all the same. As our anniversary falls near the end of the year, I like to use the occasion to reflect on the big picture of how things have progressed over the last 12 months. Just after last year’s anniversary, we held an employee retreat, during which we refined the Oxide brand. Based off discussions from…

Oxide wins 4 at AIGA Nebraska’s 2018 Show

We are pleased to announce that Oxide received two gold, one silver, and one bronze awards this past Saturday at AIGA Nebraska‘s 2018 Show. Nebraska’s biggest annual design competition, Show. recognizes great design from around the state. We are privileged to have our work selected by a panel of national design judges: Richard Hollant, Marq Mervin, and Sadie Red Wing. And we want to thank our amazing clients, whose projects and collaboration have kept us striving to produce the most…

Oxide rebrands!

Well, we didn’t so much “rebrand” as “clarify our verbal brand” — which is an important service we offer to our clients. We see a company’s brand as divided into two branches: visual and verbal. Oxide is pretty well set in our visual brand (which has remained almost unchanged since the inception of Oxide). The verbal brand, on the other hand, is not something we have written down in black and white. We decided it was a good time to follow our own…

Omaha Shirt Project:
Areas of Omaha

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Oxide Design Co. loves Omaha and our neighborhoods. In late 2016, we launched Omaha Shirt Project: t-shirts we designed to help others who also love these communities show off their pride and support their neighborhood associations. In the ensuing 18 months, the original 12 shirts grew to 18 and the project has enabled us to donate over $4,000 to neighborhoods across the city. To commemorate the success of the Omaha Shirt Project, we…

Crafting your beer brand:
Good design is good business

I was recently invited to make a presentation about craft beer branding to the attendees of the 2018 Nebraska Grower & Brewer Conference. (Due to a scheduling snafu, I was unable to make the presentation in person, but instead ended up recording it later. Silver lining: now there’s a video that you can watch from the comfort of your couch while enjoying your favorite craft beer.) The presentation is titled “Crafting your beer brand: Good design is good business” — and…

Oxide featured in LogoLounge 10

Oxide’s logo design work was recently featured in LogoLounge 10: 2,500 International Identities by Leading Designers, which is part of a long-running series. The latest volume was judged by ten leading designers from around the world (including Aaron Draplin, Von Glitschka, Su Mathews Hale, Emily Oberman, and Felix Sockwell) and authored by Bill Gardner and Emily Potts. More than 37,000 logos were considered for the tenth volume in the set. With the inclusion of six logos in this most recent book,…

Oxide celebrates 16 sweet years of branding and design

This week we celebrate Oxide’s 16th anniversary! Full disclosure: on a somewhat regular basis, we have conversations with clients about promoting any given round-number anniversary of their business. The question we always pose is: “Yes, it’s a success that you’ve been in business this long, but why would your customers care about it?” More often than not, we counsel them to skip making a public splash and to instead use the occasion to internally evaluate how things are progressing, and…

A peek into an Oxide design award submission

Last year, Oxide was honored with a nomination for a prestigious national design award. Spoiler alert: we did not end up winning the award. Even though we didn’t win, submitting an entry for the competition helped us clarify and express a lot of things about Oxide and who we are. In line with the award, which recognizes design that enhances the quality of life, we focused our application on Oxide’s unique contributions to the community and the ways we’ve used design…

Michael Bierut commemorative poster

How do you design a poster to promote one of the most recognizable designers of the modern era? I sit on the board of directors for design alliance OMAha (a local organization about design in all forms and the education and community that perpetuate it). As part of an ongoing speaker series, we arranged to host Michael Bierut of Pentagram to commemorate the tenth anniversary of daOMA. The team at Oxide jumped at the chance to design the promotional materials…
