Danner for Nebraska Website, Part II

As Election Day nears, I thought it would be a good time to write an update on the Danner for Nebraska campaign website. I previously wrote about my experience building Spencer Danner’s campaign website when he launched his campaign nearly a year ago. At that time, he requested that we build the site on NationBuilder, which is a web platform available specifically for political candidates and causes. The development experience of NationBuilder reminded me of working with something like SquareSpace.…

Introducing Gutenberg

Recently, I wrote a post on the Oxide blog about the future of WordPress. Big changes to the web’s most used content management system are getting closer and closer (yet we still don’t know exactly when the changes will officially be part of the WordPress core). If you had the chance to read that post, you’ll know that I laid out some ideas and predictions on the impact of WordPress’ new editing experience, aptly named Gutenberg (after the inventor of…

WordPress 5.0, or How I learned to stop worrying and love the future

At Oxide we use WordPress to build client web projects. We love WordPress because it’s such a versatile tool to build websites. It comes right out of the box with a very mature content management system that’s simple to hand off to clients to maintain themselves. One of our main goals with any web project is to make it as extensible as possible for clients so they don’t have to come back to us to maintain content or make small…

The Strawhecker Group website

Recently Oxide completed work for The Strawhecker Group (TSG), an Omaha-based consulting firm who provide advisory services for financial institutions from fintech startups to Fortune 500 companies. TSG’s clean design gives content room to breath. When they reached out to Oxide, they were looking for a new website. Their previous website failed to project the level of professionalism and influence they have within their industry. It was a relic of TSG’s early days when they were a small company working…

Danner For Nebraska website

Recently Mandy Mowers wrote a blog post about the work Oxide has done for Spencer Danner’s campaign for Nebraska’s Secretary of State. Much like Spencer himself, we’ve put a lot of energy and excitement behind the work we’ve done on this campaign to this point. The one aspect of the campaign material I’ve worked on most is the campaign website. Generally, we build websites on top of WordPress. It’s very flexible and simple for clients to update when we hand…

Verdis Group website

As their name would suggest, Verdis Group is all about doing things green. They provide sustainability practices and solutions to large companies and organizations throughout the Omaha metro area and beyond. One thing I really appreciate about Verdis Group is their approach. Their methods aren’t green for the sake of being green; Verdis Group offers their clients methods to reduce costs while reducing their carbon footprint. It’s really a win-win for everyone.

Lessons Learned after One Year with Oxide

A little more than a year ago, I received an email from Drew Davies asking me to join Oxide Design Co. It was one of life’s rare moments of absolute clarity. After chatting with Drew about Oxide and how I would fit in and meeting the rest of the team, my mind was made up. And when I received that email with a subject line that read, “Oxide offer of employment,” I didn’t even have to read the message. Since…

Craftsmanship and code

At Oxide, I build websites. At least that’s the way I describe it when I meet new people and they ask me what I do for a living. It’s the easiest way for me to avoid confused looks and quick dismissals from would-be new acquaintances when I attempt to give a little detail and background about what I do. (Believe me, I’ve a/b tested it!)

The design student’s dilemma

It’s that time of year when students are looking for summer plans. Many agencies and design firms in town are accepting applications for internships, and students are applying (and the smartest students are applying at Oxide). For design students, it’s a great opportunity to put your skills to use in a professional environment, produce work for real clients, and gain valuable experience working within deadlines and budgets. I don’t think it’s some big secret that design jobs are hard to…

Wes’s Great™ Holiday TV and Movies

Thanks to Mandy taking this series to a new level with the inclusion of Great™ TV, I’m offering my list: Great™ holiday TV and movies. My list of Great™ holiday TV and movies is not limited to holiday-themed entertainment. It’s more of a breakdown of how I spent my extra time off over the holiday break. Each holiday season, after family gatherings have wound down, I tend to spend my extra free time catching up on Great™ TV shows and movies I’ve been…
